Richard Hansen ecdb105bfe server: Refine process lifetime management ... Define states and use them to properly handle multiple calls to `start()`, `stop()`, and `exit()`. (Multiple calls to `exit()` can happen if there is an uncaught exception or signal during shutdown.)
